Christmas day marks the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. It is the greatest event for the people of the Christian community and also a major secular event for the other communities. Christmas Day is celebrated on the 25th of December and is marked with great fun and cheerfulness the world over. Christmas marks the start of the Winter Solstice.
Christmas Day was first properly celebrated in the 4th century during the reign of Emperor Constantine. Since then, Christmas is being celebrated with great charm almost all over the world. According to popular belief, the name “Christmas”, has originated from the Mass of Christ. The main part of Christmas is the mass in which the Christians pray for Jesus who gave his life for the well being of the human race. In some places, Christmas is also referred to as X-mass.
Prayer services and church services are an important part of Christmas Day. The celebrations start from the previous day (known as Christmas Eve) and continue till the next day. At the clock strikes midnight, Christians go to the churches and cathedrals and join the prayer ceremonies. The prayers are conducted by the priests. After the prayers are over, people take blessing from the priests and exchange greetings among each other. Kids and children burst firecrackers and make merry.
Another popular belief that is associated with Christmas Day is the legend of Santa Claus. It is believed that Santa Claus or Father Christmas comes to the child and presents gifts to him or her. Children also decorate Christmas trees to celebrate the event. The trees are adorned with twinkling lights, bells, holly leaves, nativity scenes and other ornaments and items.
Usually on Christmas Day, all the family members have dinner or lunch together with traditional meals. In most cases, a traditional Christmas meal includes roasted turkey or chicken which is mixed with potato salad and local rice. To add to the taste of the meal, refreshing alcoholic beverages such as wine, rum and cocktails are taken.
Christmas marks the time for celebrations. To mark the event, plenty of cultural and entertainment events are held. Shopping is also a major form of celebration and people irrespective of age go on a shopping spree. The shops offer discounts and rebates on almost all goods and items.
